She has been the leader of the Social Democratic Alliance since She was elected to the Althing in At age 36, she is Iceland's youngest prime minister. She got a bachelor's degree from the University of Iceland and a master's degree in international studies from Yale University. She earned a master's degree in economics from Boston University.

She also worked for the analysis department of Arion Bank.

In the parliamentary election , she was elected into the Icelandic parliament for the Social Democratic Alliance. The coalition leaders were called " valkyries ", because the three parties are led by women.
