It is still part of a leading defence technology company Northrop Grumman following a merger in He began his aviation career in his early 20s, joining the Loughead Aircraft Manufacturing Company in California as a draughtsman or engineering technician. Loughead was the early predecessor of The Lockheed Corporation. It built passenger aircraft and seaplanes for private use in California but closed in when it was affected by a rush of aircraft hitting the market after the First World War.

Its founders would go on to form Lockheed in , but Northrop did not join them initially. He went on to work for the Douglas Aircraft Company, joining in as a project engineer. He then switched to Lockheed in , only a year after its founding. At Lockheed , he worked as chief engineer on the Lockheed Vega.
